Configuration of CdEx
A part of "A simple complete MP3 ripping guide / tutorial (© 2002-2008 www.susdorf.com)
How to configure CdEx:
1. In the register "General":
- Temp directory - your default temp directory (usually preset) or CdEx directory or whatever else
- ID Tag Version - "ID 3-V1 & ID3-V2"
2. In the register "Filenames":
- Filename Format - "%1 - %Y% - %2%\%7 - %4" (this formula is responsible for creating a properly named directory for each audio-CD in your mp3 directory, and for the properly named mp3 files, incuding track numbers and names in the filenames.)
- WAV -> MP3 - your mp3 directory
- Recorded Tracks - your mp3 directory
![]()
3. In the register "CD ROM":
- CD-Rom - if you have several CD-Rom dirves (maybe CD-Burner, DVD-Drives...), choose your CD-Rom drive, where you have inserted your Audio CD).
- All other options, as it is shown on the screenshot.

4. In the register "Encoder":
- Encoder - "Lame MP3 Encoder..."
- Bitrate min - "320 kbps". If you want to keep the size of your mp3 files smaller, you can set it to 192 kbps or whatever, but come on - nowdays data storage is getting all the time cheaper and cheaper. Don't make an error trying to save your hard drive space - rip it at 320 kbps or even forget mp3s and create flac files (it's another file format, see wikipedia article about flac for main info). Flac is a "loseless" compression technic - i.e. other then in mp3 format, no quality will be lost, whether it is hearable or not.
Actually, I don't think, that many people can hear the difference on the moderately priced consumer-oriented HiFi equipment beetween the mp3 created with the bitrate 192 kbps and one with 320 kbps :-) But - remember one thing - do not rip anything with bitrate < 160 kbps, the quality will be poor.- Mode - Stereo
- Quality - Very high
- All other options, as it is shown on the screenshot.

5. In the register "Local CDDB":
- CDDB Path - your CDDB directory
- All other options, as it is shown on the screenshot.
6. In the register "Remote CDDB":
- E-Mail adress - your e-mail adress, or just ANY fictional e-mail address if you don't want to tell your e-mail address, as in my example.
- All other options, as it is shown on the screenshot.
So, you have now an installed and fully configured programm CdEx and 3 directories: CdEx directory, CDDB directory, and mp3 directory. LET'S GO!
